Chinese Ambassador threatens Canadians over political refugees

OTTAWA, ON (October 15, 2020) – Today, Chinese Ambassador Cong Peiwu criticized the Government of Canada for its recent decision to accept Hong Kong asylum seekers.

ACHK strongly condemns Ambassador Cong Peiwu and the Chinese Communist Party’s veiled threats at today’s press conference. We would like to remind Ambassador Cong Peiwu that the Chinese Communist Party signed an international agreement to uphold Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms for 50 years: an agreement they have ignored, trampled on, and now torn to shreds. Their actions are the reason that many Hong Kongers are seeking asylum in Canada, because they no longer feel safe in Hong Kong or their human rights will be protected in Hong Kong under control of the new National Security Law.

Ambassador Cong has issued a direct threat to Canadians. He warned that accepting asylum seekers from Hong Kong would jeopardize the health and safety of the 300,000 Canadians living in Hong Kong. It should not be lost on Canadians living in Hong Kong or China, they could be next – Ambassador Cong suggested so himself.

We urge the Government of Canada to stand strong and not back down. ACHK stands with asylum seekers from Hong Kong and around the globe. We encourages the Canadian government to continue processing such claims expeditiously and implement ACHK’s recommendations.

ACHK supports and welcomes Taiwanese, Tibetan, Uyghur, Chinese, and other communities who are suffering from persecution by the Chinese Communist Party. ACHK stands in solidarity with Indigenous and marginalized communities both within Canada and abroad. alliancecanadahk.com | [email protected]
